Hong Kong China – Protests in Hong Kong have escalated in recent days with clashes between demonstrators and police turning violent in several parts of the city. The latest incident occurred on Saturday when a group of protesters stormed a shopping mall in the Tsim Sha Tsui district leading to a confrontation with riot police.

The protesters who were mostly young and dressed in black smashed windows and set fires in the mall causing widespread damage and chaos. The police responded with tear gas and batons leading to injuries on both sides.

The protests which began in June were sparked by a controversial extradition bill that would have allowed suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial. However they have since evolved into a broader movement demanding greater democracy and autonomy for Hong Kong.
